Dr. James

Hello, I'm Dr. John-Paul James, the Founder and CEO of Total You Behavioral Medicine & Research Center and Reflexology & Polarity Therapy Center. As a Biomedical Neuroscientist, Board-Approved Clinical Integrative Nutritionist, Certified Reflexologist, Clinical Herbalist, Integrative Mental Health Therapist and Personal Professional Chef, my practice spans a wide range of disciplines including behavioral medicine, energy medicine, lifestyle medicine, psychotherapy, integrative health coaching, and a variety of therapeutic techniques such as reflexology, polarity therapy, shiatsu massage, body contouring, as well as exercise physiology and therapy, and movement therapy, all aimed at holistic patient care. I am renowned for my effective Body Contouring (Fat Reduction) program among other methods I employ to guide my clients towards optimal health.

Previously, I held the position of Assistant Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Extension Campus Director, and Adjunct Professor at a regionally accredited higher education institution. In these roles, I oversaw the daily operations of the graduate program at the extension campus and was instrumental in developing and integrating the Mind-Body Medicine curriculum into the graduate studies program. I managed the Mind-Body Medicine internship program within an integrative psychological and primary care framework. Leading a research team, I explored the efficacy of nutrition and exercise in addressing fat reduction, mucus cleansing, inflammation, and holistic approaches to managing diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and mental health issues, achieving significant results in utilizing food combined with exercise as medicine. As a Former Professor of the Integrative Mind-Body Medicine and Nutrition Program, I designed and delivered courses on the Principles of Pharmacology for Counseling, Nutrition Counseling & Holistic Medicine Concepts, Anatomy & Physiology for Ministry, Counseling Theories and Techniques, New Testament Foundations, and Systematic Theology.

My academic journey encompassed deep dives into Medical Culinary Arts, Medical Neuroscience and the Neuroscience of Anatomy, Physiology, and Nutrition, complemented by extensive research on leveraging nutrition to manage mental health, chronic illnesses and pain. My work, particularly the study titled “The Effects of Nutrition on the Brain,” was published and highlighted in the January 2023 Vol 46 No.1 issue of the Journal of the Council on Nutrition of the American Chiropractic Association. Additionally, I've authored an E-Book, “PLANT BASED NUTRITION FOR CHRONIC ILLNESS,” sharing my insights and findings on how plant-based diets can positively impact chronic health conditions.

Integrative and functional nutrition adopts a holistic approach to health and nutrition, emphasizing a whole-foods, whole-person perspective. This method extends past the fundamentals of dietary guidelines to include considerations of digestive health and underlying causes of imbalance. It also factors in the environmental impact, genetic predisposition, and both physiological and psychological influences on disease. In crafting interventions, both internal and external factors are meticulously evaluated to ensure that recommendations are precisely tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual.

As an integrative clinical nutritionist/herbalist and mental health therapist, I weave together my expertise in medical nutrition therapy with elements of integrative and behavioral medicine, as well as functional medicine. This approach allows for a harmonious blend of various philosophies to create a unified treatment plan. Central to our success is the collaboration and open communication among the nutritionist/therapist, the patient, and any other healthcare professionals participating in the patient's treatment. Together, we form a dedicated team, focusing on a whole-foods-based plan that may also encompass supplements and herbal remedies, tailored to address the distinct needs of each individual patient.
